Union County Executive Committee Passes Statement of Disapproval

The Union County Republican Party Executive Committee voted unanimously to pass a Statement of Disapproval during its October 9, 2025 meeting.

The statement focused on actions taken by three Republican members of the Monroe Town Council who voted to transfer power and strategic political advantage from a Republican Councilman to a Democrat Councilwoman who is running for Mayor of Monroe and is a member of the NC Democratic Party Executive Committee.

Statement of Disapproval

Whereas Julie Thompson, James Kerr, Gary Anderson, and David Dotson are members of the City Council of Monroe, North Carolina, and are registered Republicans;

Whereas Councilman David Dotson was Mayor Pro Tem of Monroe, NC, and is a registered Republican;

Whereas Council Member Surluta Anthony is a registered Democrat, a Democrat candidate for Mayor of Monroe, and is a member of the North Carolina Democratic Party State Executive Committee;

Whereas Julie Thompson, Gary Anderson, and James Kerr put forth and voted for a motion on or about July 8, 2025, to remove and replace David Dotson as Mayor Pro Tem with Surluta Anthony;

Whereas by this action, Julie Thompson, James Kerr, and Gary Anderson provided strategic political advantage to a member of the Democratic Party, Surluta Anthony by appointing her as Mayor Pro Tem, thereby granting her increased public visibility, leadership legitimacy, and heightened recognition among Monroe voters;

Whereas the Union County Republican Party disapproves of members of the Republican Party endorsing, aiding, or otherwise supporting the political interests of members of the Democratic Party;

Therefore, the Union County Republican Party, at its regular meeting held on October 9, 2025, disapproves of the actions taken by Council Members Julie Thompson, James Kerr, and Gary Anderson, in their capacities as members of the Monroe, North Carolina City Council, that have given support to the political interests of a member of the Democratic Party.
